In the wake of the recent tornado, the Hamden Police Department would like to warn residents of potential scams.

Although most homeowners are desperate to get their residence repaired, several precautions should be adhered to:
- Ask the contractor for proper identification and a business card
- Ask the contractor for references. Contact the references before hiring the contractor.
- Ask for proof of insurance. It is imperative that the contractor has disability and workers’ compensation insurance. If the contractor does not have insurance and is injured on your property, you may be liable.
- Request a written contract. The contract should contain information including, the description of work to be performed, costs and a payment schedule.
- Resist any attempts by the contractor that forces you to make a quick decision.
- NEVER pay more than a third of the costs up front.
- NEVER PAY IN CASH.

With regards to telephone solicitations, homeowners are urged to donate to charities that they know and trust.
