On September 5, 2018 at approximately 6:00p.m. Hamden Police responded to Miller Memorial Library, 2901 Dixwell Avenue on a “welfare check.” Central Communications advised responding officers that an assault had occurred in the woman’s restroom and that the person responsible was being restrained by a bystander.

Investigation revealed that a 15 year-old female was exiting the restroom when a male “jumped out at her from behind the wall.” The male “covered her mouth” and pushed her into a bathroom stall. He then locked the stall. The teen victim screamed for help. The male again covered her mouth and nose, at which time she was unable to breath. A 31 year-old Hamden resident, who heard the screams, subsequently entered the restroom and stopped the assault.

Hamden Police arrested a 15 year-old Hamden resident. He was charged with Unlawful Restraint in the 1st Degree, Strangulation in the 2nd Degree and Breach of Peace in the 2nd Degree. The juvenile is scheduled to appear in Juvenile Court in New Haven on September 19th.
