On December 9th, 2022, at approximately 2:45pm, Hamden Police Detectives were patrolling the area of Dixwell Avenue and Putnam Avenue, when Detective Andrew Lipford observed a vehicle weaving in and out of traffic in an erratic manor, almost colliding with several vehicles. During the investigation, it was revealed that the vehicle was stolen out of Hamden in early December.
Detective Lipford and Detective Shawn Nutcher attempted a motor vehicle stop, however the suspect vehicle struck Detective Nutcher’s vehicle, and fled the scene. Detective Lipford observed the vehicle come to a stop at the intersection of Putman Avenue and Whitney Avenue, and the male operator exited the vehicle and began to run South on Whitney Avenue. Detective Lipford, Detective Nutcher and Officer Keron Bryce ran after the suspect, and observed him carrying a handgun. The suspect dropped the handgun while he was running, and was apprehended a short distance away. Sergeant Jomo Crawford and Officer Devon Bonds also assisted in the investigation. No one was injured during the incident.
The 17 year old male was taken into custody and charged with Larceny of a Motor Vehicle, Illegal Possession of a Weapon in a Motor Vehicle, Engaging Police in a Pursuit, Carrying a Pistol Without a Permit, Illegal Purchase of a Large Capacity Magazine and Interfering with an Officer. The juvenile had an unrelated outstanding warrant out of Hamden, for which he was also charged.
The juvenile has a court date in New Haven Superior Court for Juvenile Matters later this month.
