Earlier this afternoon, Hamden Police Officers were dispatched to the area of Mather Street and Dixwell Avenue for a complaint of a rolling shoot out involving two (2) motor vehicles.
Our Dispatch Center advised Officers that the New Haven Police Department (NHPD) also received complaints of a rolling shoot out in their city and the two (2) vehicles matched the description of the vehicles from the HPD rolling shoot out. Dispatchers also advised that an un-involved motorist reported that the aforementioned vehicles drove by him on Mather Street and that his vehicle was struck by bullets/projectiles.
A short time later we were contacted by St. Raphael’s Hospital who advised us that a gunshot victim, a 21 year old New Haven resident, recently arrived for treatment of a gunshot wound. This victim was later transported to Yale New Haven Hospital. This victim suffered from an apparent gunshot graze wound. Victim stated that the incident started in New Haven and he ended up in Hamden where he believes he was struck by a bullet/projectile. At this time the victim is listed as critical, however he was conscious and alert at the time of the interview. One of the vehicles involved was reported stolen earlier this morning and later recovered in another town. The second vehicle involved was located, stopped, and unoccupied on Dixwell Avenue near Arch Street, after it was involved in a motor vehicle accident.
The investigation is active and on-going. Detective Sergeant Jomo Crawford is assigned to the investigation along with several members of the Major Crimes Unit. Anyone with information please call 203-230-4040.
