On September 23, 2018 Hamden Police responded to a Dixwell Avenue residence on the report of a past-tense assault. The assault occurred on a Connecticut Transit bus on September 22nd.

Investigation revealed that a 16 year-old Hamden resident entered the bus in the vicinity of Dixwell Avenue and Putnam Avenue. She reported that a passenger, who has been identified as Marquita Mcelya, immediately began provoking her. According to the teen, Mcelya made demeaning comments to her. Mcelya then attacked her. The teen reported that Mcelya threw a cup of soda at her. She then “struck her an unknown amount of times with closed fist punches.” The teen further reported that Mcelya bit her on the forearm. The teen sustained injuries to her neck, face and arm. She was transported to a medical facility for medical treatment by a family member.

Officer Justin Thibault conducted a comprehensive investigation, which led to the application of an arrest warrant for Mcelya. The court approved the arrest warrant application.

On November 8th Hamden Police arrested Marquita Mcelya, 40, of 51 Chapel Street, New Haven. She was charged with Assault in the 3rd Degree, Risk of Injury to a Minor and Disorderly Conduct. Mcelya, who was detained on a court-ordered $20,000.00 bond, was arraigned at Meriden Superior Court later in the day.
