- This press release is a follow up to press release 24-19 from 04/24/24.
On 04/24/24 at approximately 4:55pm Hamden Police Officers responded to the area of Spruce Bank Road on a complaint from a person fishing who reported that they had been shot in the arm by what they believed to be a BB gun. The victim reported that they thought the person who shot them fled in a vehicle. Officers checked the area with negative results.
On 04/24/24 at 6:48pm Hamden Police Officers responded to the area of Ives St and Spruce Bank Road on a 911 call reporting that a person had been shot. Hamden Police officers located the victim who had injuries consistent with having been shot multiple times including to the face. It was not immediately clear what type of weapon had been used.
Hamden Police Officers located a suspect, who was still on scene, that was holding a rifle. The suspect was pointing the rifle at their own head threatening to harm themselves. Officers engaged the suspect in a dialogue from behind cover. The suspect then pointed the rifle at the Officers and began firing at them numerous times. Officers now realized that the weapon was in fact a pellet gun.
The suspect struck Hamden Police Vehicles with pellets causing damage.
Hamden Police Officers engaged the suspect with less lethal bean bag projectiles. The suspect was struck and Officers were able to take him into custody. The suspect, a 47 year old male, was transported to the hospital for an evaluation. The suspect is currently under guard and is expected to be charged at a later time.
The victim sustained serious but non-life threatening injuries and was transported to the hospital.
On 05/09/24 Hamden Police Officers arrested David Bertuglia d.o.b. 06/08/79 on the strength of an outstanding arrest warrant for his involvement in the pellet gun incident from 04/24/24.
Bertuglia was charged with the following charges:
- Assault 1st degree Serious Physical Injury 53a-59(a)(1)
- Assault 1st degree Discharge of a Firearm 53a-59(a)(5)
- Carrying a dangerous weapon 53-206
- Reckless endangerment 53a-63
- Interfering with an officer 53a-167a
- Disorderly conduct 53a-182
Bertuglia was held on a $500,000 bond and presented for arraignment at GA #7 in Meriden on 05/09/24.
