On May 26, 2019 at approximately 1:00p.m. Hamden Police responded to the main entrance/exit of the Miller Memorial Library, 2901 Dixwell Avenue on the report of a motor vehicle accident, involving a mobility scooter.

Investigation revealed that Robert Sheard, 74, of Hamden was crossing Dixwell Avenue in his mobility scooter, in front of the library. Sheard, who was not in a crosswalk, was struck by a motor vehicle that was traveling westbound on Dixwell Avenue. The motor vehicle was operated by a 69 year-old Middletown resident.

Sheard was ejected off of his mobility scooter. An off-duty Connecticut State Trooper arrived at the scene immediately after the crash. He promptly rendered medical assistance, until the arrival of Hamden Fire Rescue. Sheard was transported to Yale-New Haven Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
