On July 1, 2020 at approximately 5:30p.m. Hamden Police responded to the area of 2390 State Street on the report of a motor vehicle accident with injuries.
A preliminary investigation revealed that 2 motor vehicles were traveling southbound on State Street at a high rate of speed. Witnesses reported that both vehicles were driving “erratically” and that they were passing other vehicles that were traveling southbound on State Street by “crossing the double yellow lines.” One of the vehicles, a Toyota Corolla, that was stolen in Hamden on June 17th, struck the operator of a scooter that was traveling northbound on State Street. The operator of the scooter suffered life-threatening injuries and was transported to Yale-New Haven Hospital. He was pronounced dead at the hospital shortly thereafter. The identity of the deceased is being withheld pending the notification of his next of kin.
Moments after striking the victim, the occupants of the stolen Toyota Corolla, exited the vehicle and entered the second vehicle, described as a blue Honda, Connecticut registration AS-54198, that was driving erratically. The occupants of the Honda were last observed traveling southbound on State Street.
State Street, between Foote Street and Fernwood Road will be closed for several hours.
The Hamden Police Department Traffic Division is conducting the investigation. Anyone with information is asked to contact Officer Nicholas Lovett at (475) 201-1201.
