On January 1, 2021 the Hamden Police Department Traffic Division conducted an investigation regarding a motor vehicle accident that occurred in the area of Whitney Avenue and Buell Drive. The operator of one of the vehicles, James McKenna was killed in the crash.
Investigation determined that the vehicle that was operated by Taya Petteway-Campbell, was traveling northbound on Whitney Avenue. Her vehicle crossed the double yellow center markings and struck McKenna’s vehicle, which was traveling southbound on Whitney Avenue, “head-on.”
Officer Brett Ferrara conducted the investigation, which led to the application of an arrest warrant for Petteway-Campbell. The court approved the arrest warrant application.
On March 2, 2021 Hamden Police arrested Petteway-Campbell, 22, of Hamden. She was charged with Manslaughter in the 2nd Degree with a Motor Vehicle, Operating a Motor Vehicle Under the Influence, Speeding and Failure to Drive in Proper Lane. Petteway-Campbell, who was released after posting a court-set $75,000.00 bond, is scheduled to appear at Meriden Superior Court on May 3, 2021.
