On 03/13/22 at approximately 3:30pm, Hamden Police officers responded to the area of Dixwell Avenue near North Street on a reported pedestrian struck by a motor vehicle. The victim died from his injuries and was later identified as Raekwon McLean, age 24, of New Haven.
Detective Donald Remillard conducted an extensive investigation into the fatal incident, leading to the arrest of Devington Beckford, age 25, of New Haven on 04/27/22.
The investigation revealed that the victim, McLean, was driving a reported stolen SUV that was being chased by another vehicle, operated by Beckford.
Beckford reported the SUV stolen a few days earlier and attempted to call 911 while following the car. The stolen vehicle operated by McLean was involved in a collision with a third vehicle on Dixwell Avenue at the intersection of North Street.
McLean ran from the stolen SUV at the scene of the accident towards North Street. Beckford accelerated his vehicle onto North Street towards McLean, as he was running away. As McLean ran, he fell in the roadway and was driven over by Beckford’s vehicle.
Beckford was charged with Manslaughter 1st Degree and Reckless Endangerment 1st Degree. He was assigned a 05/11/22 court date in Meriden Superior Court and held on a $500,000.00 bond.
