On July 26, 2017 members of the Hamden Police Department and Hamden Fire Department responded to 1270 Sherman Avenue on the report of an unresponsive 11 month-old infant. Hamden Health Care employees were rendering medical assistance to the infant. Hamden Fire Rescue continued life-saving measures. The infant was transported to Yale-New Haven Hospital for medical treatment. On July 31st, the infant was pronounced dead.

Investigation revealed that the infant’s father, Daniel Armfield, transported the infant and 2 other children, to Hamden Health Care, to pick up her biological mother. Upon arrival, Armfield checked on the infant and determined that she was not breathing. A Hamden Health Care worker immediately came to her aid.

A subsequent search of Armfield’s motor vehicle led to the discovery of several loose pills. The pills were located on the backseat floor. The pills were identified as Oxycodone. Officers further seized a small quantity of cocaine, marijuana and methamphetamine from inside of the vehicle. A search of Armfield’s residence led to the seizure of 2 empty Oxycodone prescription bottles.

An autopsy was performed on the infant. The Medical Examiner determined that the cause of death was “Acute Oxycodone Intoxication.” Manner of death was listed as “undetermined, ingested medication prescribed to another.”

Detective Angelo DeLieto conducted the investigation, which led to the application of an arrest warrant for Armfield. The court approved the arrest warrant application.

On March 29th Hamden Police arrested Armfield at Hamden Police Headquarters. Armfield, 32, of 7 Elliot Drive, Hamden was charged with Reckless Endangerment in the 1st Degree, 3 counts of Risk of Injury to a Minor, Possession of Marijuana, Possession of a Controlled Substance and several motor vehicle charges. Armfield, who was detained on a court-ordered $75,000.00 bond, is scheduled to appear in court in Meriden on April 12th.
